WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: Ghost Blur!
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: Learning to create "ghosts" with slow shutter speed is important for developing creative control over capturing motion, teaching how to balance exposure with movement, and for producing unique artistic effects. By moving a subject during a long exposure, a photographer can learn to intentionally create a blurred, ethereal trace of that subject while the background remains in focus, a technique useful for conveying concepts like spirituality or dreams. It also provides a foundational skill for other techniques like light painting and motion blur, which rely on a similar understanding of how a camera records movement over time.
HOW WILL MY TEACHER KNOW WHAT I LEARNED: You will follow along with instruction and use what we have learned to create amazing photos!
Double click to open the folder on your desktop
Create a NEW FOLDER INSIDE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY2 FOLDER
(right click...New Folder)
Name the folder:
GHOST BLUR
Though we will be working together, you ALL should turn in DIFFERENT images!
For this assignment, you’ll be creating a series of “ghost blur” photos. Your goal is utilize camera settings to create a transparent "Ghost". The goal is to capture the essential elements of the image and draw the viewer's attention to those specific details.
These photos can be funny or scary.
Make sure you are in a shaded area or inside. (ask permission before taking photos inside anywhere!)
These do not work in direct sunlight!
Have the person or people move in a couple of different positions as you take the photos.
Focus on composition, expression (through body language), and TELLING A STORY!!!
Remember to be creative! Look for different places around campus!
This task will test your creativity and patience!
Using a slow shutter speed, create a photo where the model is in focus, but people surrounding the model are blurred (and look like ghosts!).
Set your camera to M!
You are in control of ALL settings again!
M (Manual)
Set your ISO to 100! (Base ISO)
You will adjust this accordingly.
SHUTTER SPEED: 2 seconds!
Speeds slower than 2 sec will likely be too bright, but try it to see if you can get more blur!
Set your APERTURE to get the exposure meter in the center!
Click the Right Cross Key
Lets change the Drive mode to
Self Timer: 2 Seconds
This will help NOT MOVE the camera after the shutter is open!
This means you click the button and let go!!
Cross Keys are located BELOW the MENU button...
CROSS KEYS
Exposure Compensation (Up)
Self-Timer/Drive Mode (Right)
Erase Button (down)
AF/MF Button (left)
Click the Q Button in the center of the cross keys...
Lets change the Focus mode to ONE SHOT
This means you click the button one shot at a time!
Press the Q button
Spot Focus on the subject!
Auto Focus Area (top left AF button):
How much of your camera is able to see with your auto focus
Spot: only that little box will have it in focus. Good for Portraits.
Whole Area Auto Focus: Camera will determine what needs to be in focus.
Good for Landscapes
Take your time... Focus on one idea and take a few shots. Be patient!
Don't rush!
ALL PHOTOS MUST BE DIFFERENT and IN DIFFERENT LOCATIONS!
Using a Tripod! (you will need one!)
Make sure you are in a shaded area or inside. (ask permission before taking photos inside anywhere!)
These do not work in direct sunlight!
Step by step (Type 1): Ghosts around Subject!
Set your camera on a tripod.
Set up your composition. Plan and anticipate where the movement will take place so that you fill the frame. A model should be still, standing or sitting, while other people move around them
Take the photo. Make sure you do a countdown and time it OUT LOUD so that everyone in the group coordinates!
Moving people not showing up?
They're moving too fast and too far/too much! Movements should be very small and slow!
Try a variety of movements and models – results will differ based upon how long the models stay in one spot, what they are wearing, and what’s in the background.
Whoever is controlling the camera is the artist and should come up with an idea. Tell your models what to do!
Step by step (Type 2): Subject is the Ghost!
Set your camera on a tripod.
Focus on the Subject (Model)
Photographer presses the shutter and begins counting (1, 2, 3) after the shutter releases (listen for a click).
Ask the shutter clicks, Subject (Model) slowly moves out of their position
It takes patience and practice! If you can't get the exposure meeter in the center there is too much light...GO TO A DIMMER LOCATION!
Practice when the subject should move...it will take more than one try!
