ARCHITECTUAL
ALPHABET!
WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: Alphabet Photography!
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: Alphabet photography, in its simplest form, is finding letters of the alphabet in the world around you and photographing them. You’ll be amazed at what you can find in ordinary everyday objects when you look hard enough. Then you put all the photographed letters together to create an alphabet.
HOW WILL MY TEACHER KNOW WHAT I LEARNED: You will follow along with instruction and use what we have learned to create amazing photos!
For this assignment, students will shoot images showing letters of the alphabet. The goal is to capture the essential elements of the images and draw the viewer's attention to those specific details.
You will want to try to find more than one "letter" for each letter in the alphabet. Remember, you want to be creative and use your BEST WORK!
Set your camera to M!
You are in control of ALL settings again!
M (Manual)
Set your ISO to 100! (Base ISO)
You will adjust this accordingly.
Remember, once you set your shutter speed and aperture, check the ISO to make sure the exposure meter is in the center!
SHUTTER SPEED: at least 1/125
This will help with blur. You must adjust the ISO and aperture!
Set your APERTURE!
Click the Right Cross Key
Lets change the Drive mode to
Single Shooting
This will help only take one photo at a time!!
Cross Keys are located BELOW the MENU button...
CROSS KEYS
Exposure Compensation (Up)
Self-Timer/Drive Mode (Right)
Erase Button (down)
AF/MF Button (left)
Click the Q Button in the center of the cross keys...
Lets change the Focus mode to SERVO
Press the Q button
Spot Focus on the subject!
Auto Focus Area (top left AF button):
How much of your camera is able to see with your auto focus
Spot: only that little box will have it in focus. Good for Portraits.
Whole Area Auto Focus: Camera will determine what needs to be in focus.
Good for Landscapes
Take your time... Focus and take a few shots. Be patient!
Don't rush!
ALL PHOTOS MUST BE DIFFERENT (they cannot be of an actual letter or "made" by putting items together)!
Editing your photos!
Decide which images you want to use for your final image!
Always select the best image based upon this criteria:
Does it work for this assignment?
Is it a good exposure?
Is it in focus?
ALL PHOTOS MUST BE DIFFERENT!

Your goal is to get TWENTY-SIX (26) DIFFERENT shots that are amazing!
Editing your photos!
In the Tool bar, click on the CROP TOOL
You will notice a resizable crop box immediately surrounds your image.
To constrain the crop to a certain size, click the RATIO menu at the LEFT of the Options bar (on the top of your screen)
Select 5 : 7
Now pull on the handles to resize!
This will make the image a 5x7!
Before we apply our crop, its a good idea to NOT allow photoshop to delete our cropped pixels.
Uncheck Delete Cropped Pixels:
To do this, TURN OFF "Delete Crop Pixels" in the Options panel on top.
Now if we change our mind we can recover those pixels, they will just be hidden!
Click the Check Mark to commit to the crop
Or press ENTER on your keyboard!
When everything looks good, click the Check Mark at the top right in the Options Panel.
or press the ENTER key on your keyboard!
All of your photos should be
5" high x 7" wide! (5x7)
Brightness/Contrast
Exposure
Vibrance
Hue/Saturation
Color Balance
Black & White (no Tints)
Once you have edited your image... make it BLACK & WHITE!
How to turn image Black & White:
To turn our image black and white with an adjustment layer:
Select the layer you want to adjust...
Click the Adjustment Icon on the bottom of the layers panel and select Black & White
In the Properties Panel, you can use the sliders to adjust the contrast in the image to your liking.
For example, to darken the reds (where they were when it was color) in the image, drag the red slider to the left.
To lighten the reds (where they were when it was color) in the image, drag the red slider to the right.
Create a new layer and use the Spot Healing or patch tools to clean it up!
Remember to make sure Content-Aware is selected AND Sample All Layers is checked!
Make sure your adjustment layers are ON the TOP in the layers panel so that any other alterations (spot healing etc) are adjusted also!
You will export 26 images to your Final Alphabet folder!
(They must be named correctly and need to be in this separate folder!)
CREATIVITY IS KEY! It's not just taking a photo...be creative!
