WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: Adobe Photoshop: Double Exposure
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: Learning how to create a double exposure in Adobe Photoshop is important because it builds foundational Photoshop skills while unlocking powerful creative storytelling techniques.
HOW WILL MY TEACHER KNOW WHAT I LEARNED: You will practice different tools and techniques and gradually show your success!
Create a Double Exposure
In film photography, a double exposure is a combination of two exposures in one image to produce evocative results. Learn how to use Adobe Photoshop to combine two photos, creating a seamless double exposure effect.
This will save the file to your Photography 2 (or downloads) folder!
Shortcut: Shift + Ctrl + S
(or File: SAVE AS)
Save to CREATIVE CLOUD!
Click the Save to CREATIVE CLOUD button
Name the document:
"First Initial Last Initial DOUBLE EXPOSURE"
(Example: TE DOUBLE EXPOSURE)
Click SAVE TO CLOUD DOCUMENTS
Note the shortcut!
Check your workspace...
Click on the WINDOW tab on top
Select Workspace>Essentials (Default)
This will help us be consistent during the class!
Drag the snowy landscape on top of the image of the Bison.
With the SNOW layer selected, set the Blend mode to Screen and reduce the Opacity setting.
To bring out the bison’s face and other areas, add a mask to the SNOW layer by Selecting the layer and clicking on the Add Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the Layers Panel.
Now select the BRUSH tool
Make sure BLACK is your foreground color.
Now "paint" on the mask to reveal more of the Bison's face (you are actually consealing the mask of the snow layer).
Note: where you "paint" will show in black on the mask thumbnail on the layer!
For a dramatic touch, add a Gradient Fill adjustment layer.
Click the Adjustment layer icon on the bottom of the layers panel and select GRADIENT...
Use the Violet, Orange preset (In the Purples folder in the pop up dialog box)
Set the Blend mode to Overlay
Reduce the Opacity to 60 percent.
To keep the focus on the Bison’s face, adjust the Gradient Fill angle to 0 degrees.
Double click the Gradient Fill Mask and change the angle to 0 degrees.
Click OK
File should be named:
First Initial Last Initial DOUBLE EXPOSURE.jpg
Create another Double Exposure (ASSIGNMENT 2!)
This time it's on you!
Go to the Skateboarder tab (now you will have two tabs open in Photoshop)
In the layers panel...
Grab the Skate Boarder Layer (it helps to click and drag the Thumbnail image) and drag it to the City Scape file tab!
When the City Scape file shows...
Hover over the center of the image and let go!
Now both files are in one document!
Shortcut: Shift + Ctrl + S
(or File: SAVE AS)
Save to CREATIVE CLOUD!
Click the Save to CREATIVE CLOUD button
Name the document:
"First Initial Last Initial Skateboard1"
(Example: TE Skateboard1)
Click SAVE TO CLOUD DOCUMENTS
Using the instructions we just followed,
Create a double exposure with the two files!
Hint...start by moving the skateboarder layer below the City Scape Layer!
Use the instructions from above to create a Double exposure!
