WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: Adobe Photoshop
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: Adobe Photoshop, computer application software used to edit and manipulate digital images. Photoshop was developed in 1987 by the American brothers Thomas and John Knoll, who sold the distribution license to Adobe Systems Incorporated in 1988.
HOW WILL MY TEACHER KNOW WHAT I LEARNED: You will practice different tools and techniques and gradually show your success!

Let's Begin!
Take a look at the LAYERS Panel on the bottom right of your screen!
Photoshop provides 4 key tools that allow you to edit your images without permanently altering your originals.
New Layers
Adjustment Layers
Layer Masks
Smart Objects
Here's how they work...
Adjustment Layers
Select the BACKGROUND layer
Let's brighten this image
Let's add an Exposure Adjustment Layer from the layers panel
When we add an adjustment layer, a new properties panel will pop up where we can make changes!
Make a change to the expoure to brighten the image by pulling the EXPOSURE arrow to the right a bit!
Adjustment layers effect the layers beneath them without permanently changing them.
Try toggling on and off the eye next to the Exposure 1 adjustment layer in the Layers panel...see the difference?
We can even create a new Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer to change the colors.
Pull on the slider for Hue to change the color!
Pull on the Saturation to intensify!
Masks
You can HIDE specific elements of a layer using a layer mask
The layer mask is the white box on the right of the thumbnail of your layer. Anything white is revealed. Anything black is consealed.
When applying a mask make sure the MASK is selected and NOT the thumbnail!
At the bottom of the tool bar on the left are your foreground and background colors (they can toggle back and forth with the rounded arrow)
White=Reveals (shows)
Black=Conseals (hides)
With the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer MASK selected...
Make BLACK the foregorund color (on top)
Select the BRUSH tool
Make BLACK the foregorund color (on top)
Select the BRUSH tool
Paint over just the bottle to "hide" the adjustment in the painted areas.
Layers
Retouching
Create a NEW layer by clicking on the New Layer icon on the bottom of the Layers Panel
Drag the new layer UNDER both adjustment layers
Each tool in the toolbar will tell you what it is and does by hovering over it!
Also some tools are hidden! Look for tools with a little triangle on the bottom right corner...that means there are more tools to find.
With the new layer selected...
Select the SPOT HEALING BRUSH in the tool bar on the left
With the SPOT HEALING BRUSH selected and still on the new layer (layer1)...
Check the SAMPLE ALL LAYERS box at the top in the Tool Options Bar.
Tip!
You may need to change the size and hardness of your brush!
Now click and pull on the blemishes on the photo to remove them!
The tool is sampling the original image below but only making changes to the new layer
Turn on the Flowers Layer
It is actually a folder with layers inside.
Folders are great ways of keeping layers together.
If you click the tiny arrow to the left of the Flowers Folder icon it will expand to show the other layers.
SMART OBJECTS
To keep a layer safe when resizing or applying a filter
We can convert it into a SMART OBJECT
With the Spring Flowers layer selected
Click on the Layer tab (at the top)
Select SMART OBJECTS
Convert to Smart Object
Now if we scale a layer using the MOVE tool it will preserve the original image quality.
Now if we scale a layer using the MOVE tool it will preserve the original image quality even if we resize multiple times.
On the Spring Flowers layer (it should be a SMART OBJECT...see above):
Click and pull on one of the handles to scale it
The Apple Blossoms layer is already a SMART OBJECT (it has the little Smart Object icon on the bottom right of the thumbnail on the layer)
Select the Apple Blossoms Layer
Select the FILER tab
Blur>Gaussian Blur
Pull the slider to 3.5 and click OK
When we add a filter to a Smart Object, it is applied as a smart filter
When we add a filter to a Smart Object, it is applied as a smart filter.
So we can reopen it and adjust the filter whenever we need to.
By working with layers, adjustment layers, masks and smart objects you can edit non destructively in Photoshop keeping our original images safe!
You saved to Creative Cloud so your Photoshop file saved as we went along!
EXPORTING A FILE
In order to share the image with others (online or otherwise who don't have Photoshop) we need to Export our image to it in a different format.
