Create a Double Exposure
In film photography, a double exposure is a combination of two exposures in one image to produce evocative results. Learn how to use Adobe Photoshop to combine two photos, creating a seamless double exposure effect.
We will do THIS one together!
This will save the file to your Photography 2 (or downloads) folder!
Go to the Beach tab (now you will have two tabs open in Photoshop)
In the layers panel...
Grab the Beach Layer (it helps to click and drag the Thumbnail image) and drag it to the Portrait file tab!
When the PORTRAIT file shows...
Hover over the center of the Portrait image and let go!
Now both files are in one document!
Using the MOVE TOOL simply click and drag the beach into place.
Shortcut: Shift + Ctrl + S
(or File: SAVE AS)
Save to CREATIVE CLOUD!
Click the Save to CREATIVE CLOUD button
Name the document:
"First Initial Last Initial Double1"
(Example: TE Double1)
Click SAVE TO CLOUD DOCUMENTS
Make sure the Beach layer is on TOP of the Portrait layer!
Each file we use for this project, the SUBJECT (person or thing on the white backdrop) layer should ALWAYS be under the landscape/action (the detailed image) layer!
With the BEACH layer selected, set the Blend mode to Screen and reduce the Opacity setting.
Try between 50% and 70%...YOU DECIDE!
THIS NEXT STEP IS NEW!
Sometimes, an image has too much going on (like the subject's background is almost but NOT white) and we need a simple way to remove it...
Let's create a MASK!
Select the PORTRAIT LAYER
(if working on you own files...select your SUBJECT layer)
At the top of the screen
Click the SELECT TAB
Then click SUBJECT
You should now see the "marching ants" around our subject!
"Marching Ants" are the moving dotted lines around a selection telling you there is something selected!
Now, Select the BEACH layer
(if working on you own files...select your landscape layer)
At the bottom of the LAYERS panel, click the LAYER MASK ICON to create the mask on the BEACH (or your landscape) layer!
Now your Double exposure should look cleaner!
THUMBNAIL Image is Selected:
MASK is Selected:
To bring out the Subject's face and other areas, we can use the mask on the Beach layer.
Select the BEACH layer
Click on the LAYER MASK
You know the MASK is selected if your see the white keyline around it!
Now select the BRUSH tool
Make sure BLACK is your foreground color.
Make sure your brush options are set to Hardness 0%
Size is up to you!
Now "paint" on the mask to reveal more of the Subjects's face...perhaps the eyes and mouth etc.
Note: where you "paint" will show in black on the mask thumbnail on the layer!
For a dramatic touch, add a Gradient Fill adjustment layer.
Click the Adjustment layer icon on the bottom of the layers panel and select GRADIENT...
Choose a preset (Remember there are different gradient color folders in the pop up dialog box)
You Choose the gradient!
In the Properties panel:
Adjust the Gradient Fill angle to 0 degrees.
In the Layers Panel:
Set the Blend mode to Overlay
Reduce the Opacity to about 60 percent.
File should be named:
First Initial Last Initial DOUBLE1.jpg
Ctrl+Alt+Delete then select SIGN OFF!
Please place HEADPHONES on your Monitors!
